Bentley uses Antonovs due to Brexit uncertainties

Bentley is taking the stock for a proper logistics operation to avoid potential problems with Brexit. It’s going to use giant Antonov cargo planes for supplies. The shelves are also filled to the brim with parts.

Although in the coming weeks more clearly appears to be finally coming about the consequences of Brexit and trade with the EU, Bentley is err on the side of caution. The British brand is highly dependent on parts from the EU and therefore expects difficulties. In the worst case, huge traffic jams are expected for freight traffic at customs posts. Supplies may also be delayed for a while due to uncertainties. Five Antonovs should come in handy here, says CEO Adrian Hallmark The Financial Times.

The planes will be used to get Bentley bodies made in the EU to the assembly plant in the United Kingdom. The Antonovs also have to fly huge stocks of other parts from the EU. Hallmark explains that a large inventory is being built up to avoid delays. Bentley still works according to the ‘just-in-time principle’, but according to Hallmark the shelves in Manchester and Crewe are now filled to such an extent that there is a 14-day buffer. Hallmark argues that these measures are essential, as any supply delays could have even more serious financial consequences than impending hikes in trade rates.
