The end of the year is near, so it is high time for the annual lists. Apple kicks off with its favorite and most popular apps and games of 2017.
Apple’s best iOS apps of 2017
As in previous years, Apple has compiled four different lists. Two look purely at download figures and therefore list the most popular games and apps of the year. The third and fourth are manually compiled by Apple and contain the personal favorites of the App Store editors.
Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year: Splitter Critters
As far as Apple is concerned, Splitter Critters is the best iPhone game of the year. Not surprising, because this stylish puzzle game not only looks good, it is also excellent to play on a touchscreen due to the simple controls. In Splitter Critters, you cut a game world to pieces to make colorful characters walk from side to side. The game recently got a cool ARKit update, so you can put the puzzles through the lens of your iPhone camera in the middle of your living room.

Apple’s app of the year: Enlight Videoleap
Enlight Videoleap is the best iOS app according to the Cupertino company. This is not a strange decision either, because the original Enlight was also awarded an Award by Apple in the past. With Videoleap, Enlight makes the transition from photo to video editing. Most importantly, the app makes it easy and accessible to edit and share a video locally on your iPhone. This means that you no longer need a Mac or PC if you have made a nice video that you want to share on social media.

Hidden Folks and The Witness
The Dutch Hidden Folks was voted the best game of the year for the iPad. In this game you scroll through hand-drawn search pictures for specific figures and objects. On the Mac, the brilliant puzzle game The Witness came out as the winner, although this game appeared on game consoles a few years ago.

The most popular apps of 2017
In addition to these personal choices, Apple has also announced the most downloaded apps and games. In the Netherlands, WhatsApp was downloaded most often of all free apps, while Super Mario Run was the most popular free game of the year. Baby Monitor 3G was the most popular paid app in the Netherlands, and Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic was the most downloaded paid game, Minecraft: Pocket Edition won this honor on the iPad.
