Anyone who is on vacation or going to Italy can watch out for refueling along the highway. Dutch holidaymakers indicate that they are surprised at this.
Refueling along the highway is actually always the most expensive, but in Italy you can be completely shocked about what you lose at the pump. It Algemeen Dagblad learned from a Dutch holidaymaker that he filled his tank, only to find out that a liter of Euro 95 cost a whopping € 2.60. That is quite a bit of money for a full tank. It is therefore (as always actually) extra wise to first check what it costs before you take the hose.
The ANWB leaves it AD know to be surprised by such a ‘extortionate price’ and think the liter amount of € 2.60 smells like a scam. A Dutch spokesman for the relevant fuel chain also finds it remarkable and suspects that this may be a gas station owner who has significantly increased prices on his own, possibly to compensate for lost income due to the corona crisis. Contractually, petrol station owners may set the prices themselves. The Italian branch has now apologized to the Dutch holidaymaker and says it has taken measures.
Although this concrete example is very out of control, it would be more common to spend absurdly more expensive along the highway in Italy than on quieter roads. Italians also say via Twitter that they are shocked by prices above € 2 for a liter of petrol. A few years ago, the undersigned also suddenly lost 60 cents per liter more on the highway pump in Italy. Paying extra attention and possibly making a detour won’t hurt.
