US President Joe Biden wants the government’s fleet to consist only of electric vehicles in the long term. A new decree makes achieving that target a little more concrete.
Almost immediately after taking office as president of the United States, Joe Biden announced that the entire government fleet would be electrified. Automotive News now reports that the US government is taking a more concrete step in reducing the emissions of its 600,000 to 650,000 vehicle fleet.
From 2035, the US government will only purchase zero-emission vehicles. From 2027, only fully electric light commercial vehicles such as pick-ups and delivery vans will be purchased. “The federal government has a huge fleet of vehicles that we’re going to replace with clean electric cars,” Biden said. This is not just about zero-emission vehicles, because they all have to be “[…] Manufactured in America by Americans”. A pilot project for the use of the Mustang Mach-E by the American police is already underway.
Not only the US government should electrify, according to Biden. Earlier this year, the US government said it wants 50 percent of new cars sold in the country by 2030 to be zero-emissions. Significant investments are being made, among other things, in setting up a charging infrastructure with more than half a million charging stations.
