US President Joe Biden, who took office last week, wants to renew the US government’s fleet in the coming years. He says all authorities should switch to fully electric vehicles.
President Joe Biden’s administration wants to pursue a different climate policy than the Trump administration and that is directly reflected in a promise. According to Biden, it is important that the government fleet is electrified. The 78-year-old makes no bones about it: “The government has a huge fleet of vehicles, which we are going to replace with vehicles that use clean energy. Vehicles made here in America by American workers,” quotes Automotive News. To ensure that there are also enough options for electric driving, Biden also wants to invest money in setting up 550,000 charging stations.
It doesn’t get any more concrete yet. For example, it is not clear at what pace this should happen. Biden obviously refers to cars from government agencies such as the police, fire brigade and defense, but also federal courier services, for example. According to Automotive News This currently involves roughly 650,000 vehicles, and replacing them would cost at least $ 20 billion.
Then there is of course also the question of which cars are suitable for which tasks. Fully electric trucks, for example, are still reasonably in their infancy. GM, for example, is already working on fully electric delivery vans that can be used by courier services. The new GMC Hummer could be of interest to the military. A car like the Ford Mustang Mach-E may be an option for the police. The upcoming electric version of the F-150 can also be used for this, or for Park Rangers for example. Just a few suggestions. Then there is of course Bidens ‘own’ car; The Beast. Perhaps a significantly expanded Cadillac Celestiq is an option. We are curious.
