Big Sur tip: this is how you set your own photo as the background for Safari

Now that macOS Big Sur is officially available, it is also possible to set a custom wallpaper for the Safari homepage. That is how it works.

Tip: this is how you set your own background for Safari with Big Sur

Safari plays an important role in the macOS Big Sur update. Although this new version of Safari is part of Big Sur, you can also install it on the older macOS versions Mojave and Catalina.

If you haven’t installed Big Sur yet, first make sure that at least Safari has been updated to version 14. You can do this in the Mac App Store under the ‘Updates’ tab. You can check the version by opening your Safari app and clicking on ‘Safari’ at the top of the bar. You can see the version under ‘About Safari’.

If your Safari app has been updated, here’s how to set a wallpaper:

  1. Open the Safari home page;

  2. Right-click (or two fingers on the trackpad) in the background;

  3. Click on ‘Choose background’;

  4. Finder will open. Click on the photo you want to set as the background;

  5. Click on ‘Choose’ to confirm your choice.

You can also choose default wallpapers from Safari. To do this, click on the settings icon at the bottom right. At the bottom of the pop-up menu you will see a preview of the different backgrounds that you can choose from. Click on one to set it up immediately. Here you can also click on the plus sign to add another (own) photo.

More about macOS Big Sur

Safari 14 allows you to personalize your web browser even more. In addition to setting a background, you can arrange the home page exactly the way you want. This way you can immediately see Favorites, frequently visited pages or, for example, your iCloud tabs that you have opened in Safari on your iPhone. You do this by clicking on the settings icon at the bottom right and then ticking the categories you want to see.
