You probably know Blackmagic from its innovative (cinema) cameras and the attention the makers pay to video post-processing software.

The makers are now also introducing Blackmagic Camera, for iPhone owners. The app is a good alternative to the phone’s built-in camera app and focuses on making films with a ‘Hollywood’ look. This means you can largely set up the app manually and have access to options that the standard apps don’t give you.

You can give your video material your own look by adjusting various settings. Consider this for example frame rate, white balance and ISO values. You have access to video resolution and recording format settings via a separate tab. Depending on the type of iPhone, you can choose Apple’s ProRes format and other popular file formats, such as H.264 and H.265. Moreover, you can use an external microphone while recording a video and optimize its settings. While recording, most controls appear directly on screen, so you can adjust them on the fly and don’t have to rely on the underlying menus.

The app is also intended for the more professional user. For example, there is a link with Blackmagic Cloud, which allows you to store the footage directly online and download it to other devices for video post-processing, for example.
