Following on from the recently announced S 1000 RR, BMW has also renewed the M 1000 RR, the base model of BMW Motorrad’s global racing program, launched two years ago for model year 2023.
The further developed M 1000 RR, or M RR for short, is a new milestone for BMW Motorrad when it comes to homologation of superbikes for the World Superbike Championship. Targeted aerodynamic adjustments have reduced air resistance for even greater stability and a higher top speed of 314 km/h.
“With the new M RR, we have delivered a masterpiece of engineering, especially in aerodynamic development, thanks to our constant ambition, total passion and technical finesse. Through countless hours of testing in the wind tunnel and on the road, we have we can significantly increase top speed with unchanged engine power. At the same time, downforce has increased significantly, even with the engine leaning in corners. Our development work will be rewarded with racing success.”
The big news of the 2023 M 1000 RR is therefore not in the underbody, but in improved aerodynamics that must have ensured that the potential has increased. In particular, the new streamlined fairing, made of visible carbon, and the higher windshield must have ensured optimized airflow around the rider and therefore also a higher top speed.
By the way, not only the cockpit, but also the suspension brackets of the panels are made of light yet extremely strong carbon fiber for the first time. BMW Motorrad claims that the aerodynamic changes have resulted in an increase in top speed from 306 km/h to 314 km/h. At the same time, you should experience noticeably less wind pressure on your body.
In addition to the aerodynamics, BMW Motorrad has also completely revised the M winglets. According to BMW, these now generate significantly more downforce – both straight ahead and in bends. The rider experiences more front wheel grip, so they will flatter and faster corners with more confidence and experience less tendency to wheelie when accelerating.
Aerodynamics have also been improved around the front wheel. Here we see for the first time in the history of BMW Motorrad airducts for cooling the brakes. They are made of carbon. These Brake Ducts are integrated into the front fender panels that continue along the front fork, which also provide improved airflow around the fork legs and brake calipers.
The M Aero Wheel Covers, which are also made of exposed carbon, further reduce aerodynamic drag – especially at speeds above 250 km/h. The M Aero Wheel Covers are reserved for the M RR M Competition. On the new M RR, the M carbon wheels stand out thanks to a new transparent paint coating. Rim tape in M Design underlines the high-quality technical character and racing aspirations of the M RR. Optionally, the M RR can be ordered with forged aluminum wheels.
As far as the performance of the one-litre four-in-line is concerned, there are no differences to be found with its predecessor, the 2023 also has a top power of 212 hp at 14,500 rpm and maximum torque of 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm, with BMW ShiftCam technology for variable valve timing and lift.
The 2023 M 1000 RR is available in w versions: the M RR and M RR M Competition. The Dutch starting price of the M 1000 RR is €39,800 and the bike will be available from the second quarter of 2023.
