Tuned, but does all that extra power and torque also come out on the dynamometer?
Robin Deelen has a BMW 435i Gran Coupé, is an enthusiast and knows how to make a fast car even more powerful. The 32-year-old engineer from Ouderkerk aan de IJssel spoiled his BMW with new software and a Remus exhaust, plus some front and rear spoiler work. But what is the output?
Robin was born with a love for BMW. “My father is responsible for that,” he says. “He’s been driving a 5 Series for a long time and now a 540.” Robin’s first car was a BMW 325i of the model series E36. “I also had a Club Sport. I didn’t change anything about that, because I wanted to keep it original,” he looks back on his car history. That’s different now. Robin bought a 435i from 2014 a year and a half ago. A beautiful, black Gran Coupé. “If it were up to me I would have bought a two-door, but given the plans for starting a family, this car is more practical.” It now has 120,000 km on the clock. Let’s take a look at the maximum power.
This 435i should make more power and torque
Robin is quite technically inclined and bought himself some software. “I have equipped the BMW with an MHD map switch in combination with XHP automatic software. That should yield more power and, above all, more torque.” In addition, he can open a valve in the exhaust system to generate an afterburn. And to think that Robin lives in Ouderkerk and works in Gouda; that is a commuting distance of six kilometers. “Then I don’t use all of this, that part is much too short for that.”
In Germany already 268 km / h on the GPS
With some regularity he sets course for Germany, such as for a top speed check. “I reached 268 km/h. On the GPS, because the speedometer only runs up to 250 km/h.” The question is whether it is still nice to drive in the 4-series. Robin: “It does become a bit lighter in the front, in the steering wheel, but I still felt enough downforce to stay on the ground.”
Why are people so crazy about BMW?
What is it about BMW that so many people love it so much? Robin thinks he knows: “You don’t sit in a BMW, you put it on. I think that is a condition for enjoying a car properly. If you’re in the right position, you’ll also feel the car well. It is precisely then that you notice the added value of a rear-wheel drive BMW. It steers unparalleled.” So much for Robin’s objective judgment. With regard to the plans for the expansion of the family: we regularly hear that small children in their seats in the back seat usually find a car ride at 200 km / h entertaining. As long as it’s done safely, it saves another trip to the fair.
Ghisbert often gets 435i’s for tuning
Dynamometer chief Ghisbert van Ginhoven can appreciate a car like this. “The engine block is a welcome and frequent guest with us. A lot of owners want a little bit more from this engine, the N55, and that works out great.” The 19-inch wheels take place on the Hague rollers and after calibration it is serious throttle. As the test progresses, the grin on Robin’s face gets bigger and bigger. Logical, because his efforts have not been in vain. The BMW delivers a nice 370 horsepower and the maximum torque can be there with an impressive 500 Nm. You can come home with that!
