Modestly special

The second-hand range of many generations of BMW 5-series is still quite wide. That does not apply to the E28, of which the ‘youngest’ copies are already 33 years old. If you’re looking for one, you must be a fan. Then we have a BMW 520i for you that might be worth a look.
It is not the oldest, the most expensive or the most powerful BMW 5-series E28 from the AutoWeek second-hand range that we present you today. The cheapest, although cheap is of course a relative term in this case. The asking price of this BMW 520i from 1986 is no less than €12,400. Even relatively simple BMWs from the 1980s and early 1990s are increasing in value, as we see with the 3-series E30 and even the E36. An important condition is that they are as original as possible. For this 520, that kite also seems to apply.
Normally we make an estimate of the condition of the car mainly on the basis of the advertisement photos. In this case, that already makes us hopeful, but from colleague Rik Werner we understand that it is also a picture in real life. He just happened to take a tour of this 520 recently and was impressed. It is a nice appearance, with its very light blue metallic paint and the relatively modest BBS Mahle wheels. Wheels that still look fresh, just like the paint and chrome. In the (wonderfully typical for that time) mainly blue colored interior, time seems to have stood still quite a bit and even the original and almost complete tool set is still present. Although it is a relatively simple 520, it does have a sliding/tilting roof and it scores points with the presence of the original cassette player.
How did it all stay so neat? Well, simply by not using the 520 too often. We are talking about a 36 year old car that has just over 75,000 miles on it. So about 2,000 km per year. That’s so little that it might not necessarily be just beneficial, it’s special anyway. The previous owner has remained faithful to it for at least 13 years, which instills some confidence.
You have to be here for the strongest BMW 5-series E28 from our used car range, which is also the most expensive and the oldest. Would you prefer an even lower mileage and an engine with much more punch than this 520i? Then you can go for this 535i. Can it be a bit stronger than a 520i but not much more expensive? Then this 525i might be an option. Then you immediately had the entire E28 offer of this moment. If you had to choose, which one would you go for?
