BMW announces M 1000 XR: 200 hp, 223 kilos

It has long been an open secret, but now it is official: after the M 1000 RR and the M 1000 R, BMW will also launch an M version of the S 1000 XR. According to the Germans, the M 1000 XR – M XR for short – combines sportiness with excellent performance on long journeys.

The best features of the S 1000 XR, S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR, that is the new M XR in a nutshell according to BMW Motorrad. In the anniversary year of ‘100 years of BMW Motorrad’ and the almost 100-year motorsport history, BMW has already lifted a corner of the veil by releasing images of the prototype of the M 1000 XR.

The beating heart of the M XR is the four-in-line of the S 1000 RR, with BMW ShiftCam technology. Online it was spoken in the rumor mill that the latest M would get a top power of 210 hp, but the Germans have been a bit more modest. The M 1000 XR gets a top power of 200 hp, which should give the bike a top speed of around 280 km/h.

BMW also says that the M XR will have a curb weight including all fluids of 223 kilos, but in all honesty we expected a bit more in that area. A standard S 1000 XR brings 226 kilos of roadworthy weight to the scale, which is only 3 kilos more than the M XR. BMW emphasizes that with the optional M package the weight can be reduced even further.

Of course, the M XR is equipped with aerodynamic winglets, which, according to BMW, aim to provide superior driving stability at any speed. Thanks to the downforce generated by the winglets, the wheelie tendency is suppressed and the traction control has to intervene less.

Like the M RR and MR, the new M XR also features the M braking system. It incorporates experience gained from BMW Motorrad factory racers in the World Superbike Championship. The M calipers stand out with a blue coating and the famous M logo.

BMW Motorrad will publish more information about the new BMW M 1000 XR in the second half of 2023.
