The arrival of more electric cars means that more batteries are needed. To respond to that demand, BMW is doubling the production capacity of its battery factory in China.
In Tiexi, China, the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) has now been building five generations of its ‘High-Voltage Battery’ for fully or partially electric cars. Due to growing demand, the joint venture has opened a battery center in the Chinese factory.
The batteries from the new factory are still largely intended for the electric iX3. This is also produced in China. The Chinese market plays a major role for the BMW Group. There are now 75,000 electrified BMWs on the local roads.
Production of the BMW iX3 will start at the BBA factory in Dadong at the end of September. The brand does not comment on how many new batteries will be produced. BMW started construction of the factory in 2010, which opened in mid-2012.
