BMW expands battery production

BMW is expanding its production facility in Leipzig with a second production line where it produces battery modules. The modules to be built are intended for the fully electric BMW i4.

BMW has invested €70 million in setting up a second battery module production line at its plant in Leipzig. That is of course good news for the local labor market, because it creates 250 jobs. In addition, a BMW also benefits from the arrival of the new production line. The new battery modules that BMW is building there are intended for the electric BMW i4, which sees the light of day in Munich.

The battery modules that BMW already produced in Leipzig were intended for the iX. Of course it is not so strange that BMW is ramping up its battery production. The brand has more electric cars on offer every year and the company expects that by 2030 about half of all cars it sells will be fully electric. BMW therefore does not only manufacture batteries in Leipzig. It also has battery factories in Dingolfing, Regensberg, Spartanburg and Shenyang, China.
