Nice recovery

The BMW Group is strongly committed to the use of recycled materials. In the future, cars from brands such as BMW, Mini and even Rolls-Royce must be made of up to 50 percent material that has been given a second life.
BMW Group cars are currently made up of up to 30 percent from recycled materials, according to the company itself. The German carmaker has now set its goal on using a higher percentage of recycled materials. Soon, models from BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce will have to be built up to 50% from recycled raw materials.
To achieve that goal, BMW has started a project – sponsored by the German government with €6.4 million – in which it collaborates with ‘representatives of the recycling industry’. The project is called Car 2 Car and aims to investigate and evaluate how BMW Group can further take the ‘circular economy’ into account in its production processes.
The project should, among other things, increase the recyclability of materials such as aluminium, steel, glass, copper and plastics and the use of these recovered materials in cars. BMW Group delivers 500 cars that are at the end of their automotive life. This includes not only BMWs, but also Mini and Rolls-Royce models. These are models with fuel engines, plug-in hybrid powertrains and even fully electric powertrains. These cars are pulled apart, after which Car 2 Car investigates how the material can be more effectively extracted from old cars and applied in new cars.
