BMW plans to build many more electric cars in the next three years. According to CEO Oliver Zipse, the brand will increase production by a quarter of a million cars, in order to strengthen BMW’s position in the electric car market.
Production is being increased to respond to growing demand. In an interview, CEO Oliver Zipse says that by 2023 about one-fifth of BMW’s sales should come from electric cars. That is now approximately 8 percent. “We already had ambitious growth plans and we want to expand our market position even further.”
Zipse said he was concerned about the transition to electric driving in Germany, which he said is hampered by a lack of charging points in the country. He therefore wants many more charging points to be added to meet the increasing demand. By 2030, there are expected to be 10 million electric cars in Germany.
It was previously announced that BMW is moving engine production in its oldest factory, in Munich, to make way for the construction of electric cars. BMW’s battery production will also be expanded in the new year. From 2021, one in four BMWs sold in Europe must be equipped with a (partially) electric powertrain. By 2030, that share should have grown to one in two. By 2023, BMW claims to have 25 cars with some form of electric drive in the showroom, half of which will be fully electric.
