One after the other car manufacturer is forced to shift attention further and further to the development of electric cars. This often means that the development of combustion engines is a thing of the past. Not at BMW. The brand is developing a completely new generation of petrol and diesel engines and that includes fresh six and even eight cylinders. Freude am Fahren.
New, stricter emission standards are looming and if it is up to the European Union, not a single new passenger car with a combustion engine will be sold in the EU from 2035. Several car manufacturers are focusing on the EV and have already announced hard deadlines to turn their backs on the combustion engine in Western Europe. Audi indicated that it no longer develops new combustion engines and that it continues to develop existing machines to meet the increasingly strict emission guidelines. BMW is taking a different path.
To the German Auto Motor und Sport, development head Frank Weber tells that BMW is working on a completely new generation of combustion engines. Although BMW also pays a lot of attention to the development of electric cars and associated technology, Weber says that the brand is “developing new and considerably more economical combustion engines.” This concerns both petrol and diesel engines, which may or may not be combined with (plug-in) hybrid technology. Weber is crystal clear: “BMW needs combustion engines for a few more years. That is why we are working on a new generation of engines: petrol, diesel and also six and eight cylinders.” The latter is, among other things, good news for those who were disappointed that Mercedes-AMG is giving all future AMG versions of the C-class a four-cylinder.
