For the first time in its 35-year M3 history, BMW is introducing an M3 Touring. The brand shows a new image of the M3 Touring and that suggests that it is not long in coming.
Over the years, BMW has supplied various variants of the M3. From Competition versions to the CSL and from M3 Convertibles to the M3 GTS. However, there has never been an M3 Touring, but in August last year BMW coolly announced that it would eventually unveil an M3 Touring. We are now a year further and that variant is still not there. You probably won’t have to wait long for the BMW M3 Touring.
BMW posts a photo of a wrapped M3 Touring on its Facebook page, which is accompanied by the text “Paving new roads to excellence. Stay tuned for the BMW M3 Touring”, which needs no further explanation. It is striking that BMW already releases the average consumption. That should be at 10.3/100 km.
The M3 Touring probably gets the same 3.0 in-line six under the hood as its M3 Sedan and M4 siblings. Count on a machine that in principle produces 480 hp and, as a mighty Competition, produces 510 hp and 650 Nm. The ‘entry-level M’s’ have a six-speed manual transmission, while the Competition flavors have an eight-speed automatic. In addition to rear-wheel drive M3s and M4s, BMW also supplies the powerhouses with four-wheel drive.
In 2000, BMW showed the M3 Touring Concept based on the 3-series (E46), but that car never went into production. It is striking that BMW has never delivered an M3 Touring. Just like its big brother RS6, Audi only supplies the RS4 as an Avant and Mercedes-Benz supplies the AMG versions of its C and E class as a sedan and station wagon. BMW only had two generations of the 5-series (E34 and E60/61) in the showroom as M5 Touring.
