These are the very first photos of the upcoming BMW M3 Touring. It is the first time that an M version of the 3-Series Touring has been launched by the men of BMW’s M division.
BMW enthusiasts did not know where to look in mid-August. BMW announced that it would eventually come up with an M3 Touring. Among the M fanatics, this caused tempers to rise to high temperatures. Never before in M history has there actually been an M3 Touring on the market. In 2000 BMW showed the M3 Touring Concept based on the 3 series (E46), but that car never went into production. BMW will make up for that later.
The M3 Touring only comes on the market after the regular M3 and M4. We already know what will be placed in the nose of the blast station, which is fitted with the 4-series grille. BMW has already said that the M3s and M4s have a 480 hp 3.0 six-in-line as the beating heart, a power plant that is considerably more powerful than the six-cylinder in the previous generations M3 and M4. The previous M4 was good for 450 hp as a Competition. The new M versions also come with extra potent Competition versions, all-surpassing variants that will be 510 hp and 650 Nm strong. The M3 and M4 have a manual six-speed gearbox in 480 hp strong ‘basic trim’. The Competition models are always equipped with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Basically the new M3 and M4 are rear-wheel drive, but variants with xDrive all-wheel drive follow afterwards. These photos clearly show the extended rear wheel arches. The twin-legged side mirrors and the two sets of twin tailpipes are also an M mark.
It is actually striking that BMW rarely gives Touring models the full M treatment. Only two generations of the 5-series, the E34 (photo 11) and V10-generation E60 / E61 (photo 12), BMW delivered an M5 Touring. The 3-series has never known a real M3 Touring. Audi only supplies the current RS4 and RS6 if Avant and Mercedes-Benz has the full-fledged AMG flavors of the C and E-class just a sedan and an Estate on the menu.
