BMW M4 Convertible: directly as Competition with M xDrive

The BMW M4 Convertible is here! BMW immediately sets high standards, because the open version of the M4 was immediately presented as an M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW pulled the curtain on the new M4 and the 4-series Convertible in September. A combination of the two took even longer, until now: this is the M4 Convertible! Anyone who thinks it is purely an M4 with a fabric roof is wrong. Munich immediately puts everything in place with the M4 Convertible. The standard version skips it. The M4 Convertible is directly an M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive all-wheel drive. So it is the convertible version of the most extreme M4, unveiled side-by-side with the M3 Competition about a month ago.

The M4 Convertible does not have the 480 hp but the 510 hp 3.0-liter six-in-line with two turbos in its striking nose. It sends its powers to all four wheels via the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The maximum torque of 650 Nm is available between 2,750 and 5,500 rpm. M xDrive helps the M4 Competition Convertible from a standstill to a speed of 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds, which is only 2 tenths slower than the closed M4 Competition. The sprint from 0 to 200 km / h can be accomplished in 13.1 seconds. As standard, the M4 Competition Cabrio is limited to a top speed of 250 km / h, but if you wish you can boost the top to 280 km / h with the M Driver’s Pack.

Incidentally, the emphasis is on the drive on the rear axle and even more power can be sent to the rear wheels with the 4WD Sport mode engaged. If you feel like a loose ass with the M4 Competition Convertible, you can turn off the stability control and then have the full power purely on the rear wheels. In any case, the active M limited slip differential ensures that the violence is nevertheless distributed as well as possible over the rear wheels.

As with the M4 Competition, the M4 Competition Cabrio is also full of the necessary carbon fiber accents. For example, the BMW has been expanded around the bottom of the body with splitters, skirts and other aerodynamic extras. At the rear is a large diffuser with space for four large exhausts. It is of course also a bit wider than the regular 4-series Cabrio and is closer to the ground. A chassis specially adapted for the M4 Cabrio is to provide extra stiffness, as well as special torsion struts at the rear. The M4 Convertible boasts 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels.

Of course, with such a fast convertible, you don’t want to have to wait long before the roof is open or closed. The fabric hood, which, according to BMW, is no less than 40 percent lighter than the steel roof of the previous M4 Convertible, can be opened or closed in 18 seconds. This is also possible while driving, although it is not clear at what speed that is possible. If you have the hood up, you can stow 385 liters of luggage in the boot. With the hood open, that space shrinks to 300 liters, although that is still 80 liters more than before. Not only stylish, but also practical, such a fabric shade.

Do not be surprised if the M4 Convertible also comes on the market as a less extreme ‘non-Competition’. The M4 Competition Convertible will go into production at least in July. Dutch prices and a precise date for the market launch will follow.
