BMW: ‘New Class recharges 300 km of driving range in ten minutes’

Polestar recently caused a stir with a prototype that can provide enough power for a driving range of 320 km in ten minutes. BMW promises such practices for its electric Neue Klasse models.

Recharge over 300 km of electric driving range in just ten minutes. That sounds good, right? Polestar recently tried this for a while, but it is not yet clear whether the technology required for this will also be available in the production models. At BMW they are already a lot more confident and CEO Oliver Zipse promises similar performance for the dedicated EVs that are coming. According to the CEO, they go at least 30 percent further and charge 30 percent faster than existing electric BMWs. “In practice, this means that you can charge your car in just ten minutes for a trip of 300 km. Then you barely have enough time to get a cup of coffee.”

Zipse undoubtedly attributes the particularly high charging capacity and possibly also high energy efficiency to the new batteries in the Neue Klasse models. They have so-called cylindrical battery cells. Two years ago it was announced that BMW had concluded a deal with the Chinese CATL for this purpose. These batteries will supply that. This technology should not only provide better performance, but should also significantly reduce the price. At the time, it was suggested that cost savings of up to 30 percent could be achieved.

BMW will launch the first Neue Klasse EV at the end of 2025. This is the production version of the recently presented BMW Vision Neue Class
