BMW is shutting down production at a number of plants due to supply chain disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine. That reports the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. In a number of important factories not a single car will roll off the production line next week, in other factories BMW is forced to adjust the duty rosters.
In Munich, the home city of BMW, and in Dingolfing, production will come to a complete standstill next week. There will also be no activities in the Mini factory in Oxford in the coming week. In addition, BMW is also temporarily suspending business activities in the engine factory in Steyr, Austria. These measures mean that almost the entire European production of BMW is affected by the war in Ukraine. According to a spokesperson, the car manufacturer will work with adjusted shift schedules at the factories in Leipzig and Regensburg, which means that production will be reduced. The production of the BMW X1 and Mini Countryman at VDL Nedcar came to a halt earlier.
The problems arose because BMW’s wiring harnesses, like those of Volkswagen, are produced in Western Ukraine. Not only has production in that country come to a standstill due to the war, it is also almost impossible to transport goods from the country to the European Union.
BMW also announced that it is shutting down Russian production and ceasing exports of cars to the country. According to Automotive News BMW produced 12,000 cars in the city of Kaliningrad in the past year. Last year, the brand sold 46,802 cars in Russia.
