BMW 6 Series GT

BMW is reportedly scrapping one of its rarest models: the 6 Series GT. The arrival of the new 5-series heralds the end of its somewhat more spacious older brother and we probably don’t have to wait for a successor to the BMW 6-series GT.

Six years ago we were introduced to the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the successor to the equally striking 5 Series GT. A wider alternative to the regular 5-series, but actually even more than that. With its longer wheelbase and the strong focus on space and pampering for the rear passengers, you can even see the 6 Series GT as a more affordable alternative to the 7 Series. It’s also a lot more practical if you want to take luggage with you, with its hatchback hatch. On paper, therefore, not such a strange offer at all, but it never really became a success. Not surprisingly, the 6-series GT story will soon end.

That has BimmerToday at least heard. Production of the BMW 6-series GT, which was still facelifted in 2020, would end this year. After that, there will be no direct successor for the time being. That is not entirely surprising given the demand for the 6-series GT. The disappointing popularity would also be the main reason for BMW not to continue with it. Here in the Netherlands, the counter of the BMW 6-series GT stands at more than 600 units after about six years, and only six were sold this year. With the disappearance of the BMW 6-series GT, the 6-series as a whole will also come to an end, although it is of course possible that sooner or later a smaller brother of the 8-series will come; a coupé (and possibly also a convertible) with a sporty character. However, there is no sign of life for the time being, so we will say goodbye to the 6-series later this year for the time being.
