BMW reveals R 1300 RT

BMW Motorrad has announced the long -awaited R 1300 RT. According to the Germans, the new RT must be lighter, more accessible and dynamic than ever before and offer a wider spectrum from comfortable tour motor to dynamic motorcycle for rides on rural roads.

BMW reveals R 1300 RT

“With the new BMW R 1300 RT we have lifted the BMW Motorrad tour icon to a completely new level,” says project manager Harald Spagl about the new R 1300 RT. “The design is lighter, more accessible and dynamic than ever before. Moreover, with a completely new engine, chassis and aerodynamics it offers a driving experience that meets the highest requirements in this segment in the field of dynamics, comfort and travel capacity.”

These are strong statements from Spagl who do not lie and based on our own experiences with the R 1300 GS and GS Adventure, the new RT will undoubtedly also be a technical feat, but in terms of design, the Germans, in our modest opinion, have finalized the plank. Beautiful is not exactly the first word that came to us when you see the first images.

Under the ugly design (we think that BMW can happily praise that tastes still differ and that there will be best motorcyclists who like it), however, there is a lot of innovative technology. Basically the block and the bicycle part of the GS have been taken over, but then adjusted to application in the RT. This also means that this RT is now good for a top capacity of 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm and optionally with the ASA semi-automatic transmission.

The RT has three driving modes of Road, Rain and Eco, with the optional Riding Modes Pro, two more driving modes Dynamic and Dynamic Pro are added. With the driving mode pre -selection, the rider can make an individual selection with the driving mode button. Electronic control of the motor brake (MSR) is part of the standard package.

The chassis of the new BMW R 1300 RT has been completely redesigned. The center is the new main frame made from sheet steel, which in addition to a significant optimization of the built -in space for even more compact packaging also offers higher rigidity than the previous model. The subframe has also been completely redesigned. Instead of the previous tubular steel construction, it is now an aluminum half -tube frame.

In combination with a drive unit that is now much more compact, the new design of the chassis has achieved a significant concentration of mass to the overall center of gravity, which translates into noticeable benefits in the handling. At the same time, the new R 1300 RT must be even more precise and more stable when braking, noticeably less effort to drive and offering an even more satisfying precise response of the suspension. Said BMW. For the latter, BMW says it has designed the Telelever front and paralever back.

New at the RT is what BMW Motorrad calls the electronic Dynamic Chassis Adaption, say Dynamic ESA at a higher level. According to the Germans, in addition to the well-known semi-active effect of the suspension (Dynamic Suspension Adjustment / DSA, to stay in BMW terms), DCA offers two selectable riding positions via the driving modes, for maximum spread of driving comfort and dynamic handling.

BMW Motorrad says it has paid a lot of attention to easy access and a low seat height. That is why the focus was on the development of the new R 1300 RT on reaching a seat height of only 780 mm. In addition to the standard buddyseat, there are other session options available as individual optional equipment from the factory.

The new BMW R 1300 RT is standard equipped with suitcases (27 liters each). Further highlights of the new R 1300 RT are the Vario-Koffers, for the first time available from the factory as optional equipment for a BMW RT. The variable baggage system makes it possible to adjust the volume of 27 to 33 liters, depending on the desired width of the suitcases.

Both suitcases are equipped with a central locking system. They also have both interior lighting and the left suitcase contains a USB-C charging point. The two top cases with a capacity of 39 and 54 liters respectively offer extra storage space. The large 54-liter luggage space is also electric. A special characteristic is the heated backrest for the passenger.

The ergonomic triangle is formed by the steering wheel, the footrests and the seat on the new R 1300 RT designed to position the rider noticeably further forward. At the same time, the more active seating position still makes relaxed touring and cruising possible, even with a passenger. The height and corner of the rider’s saddle can be adjusted to finely coordinate the riding position. The new suitcases now offer more room for the lower legs of the passenger without compromising the volume of the suitcases. The passenger-buddyseat has also been extended. There is now more room to change your seating position from time to time during longer journeys.

The “wind and weather protection concept” of the new R 1300 RT comprises adjustable skewers that are integrated homogeneously in the design. This makes it possible to provide the driver with sufficient fresh air at all times, even under challenging conditions such as city traffic or high outdoor temperatures on country roads, and offers very effective protection against wind and weather at low temperatures on the highway or motorway.

In addition to the basic version in the Uni-color Alpine White 3, the new BMW R 1300 RT is available in the Triple Black Model variant in Blackstorm Metallic, the emphatically dynamic Impulse Model variant in Racing Blue Metallic and the particularly elegant model variant option 719 CamarGue.

The BMW R 1300 RT has its market introduction in June with a consumer advice price from € 27,390,-
