BMW thinks 600 kilometers of electric range is enough

BMW sees nothing in electric cars with a range of 1,000 kilometers. The brand does not seem to be coming up with electric cars for the time being that have a greater range than about 600 kilometers.

The electric Lucid Air recently scored high with an official range of 837 kilometers to its name. That almost 840 kilometers range was also measured according to the American EPA test, a method that usually has a lower range than the European WLTP cycle. The Chinese Nio ET7 should even be able to reach 1,000 kilometers. For BMW, an EV does not have to be able to get that far on a charge, says the Australian Whichcar from the mouth of David Alfredo Ferrufino Camacho – project manager of the electric BMW i4.

According to Ferrufino, a range of 1,000 kilometers is not the goal that BMW has in mind for its electric cars. According to the high-ranking manager, BMW aims for a range of about 600 kilometers for its electric cars. Not entirely coincidentally, the BMW i4 scores in its most efficient form, as a 340 hp eDrive40 with an 80.7 kWh battery and an electric range of 590 kilometers. For plug-ins, the brand finds an electric range of about 100 kilometers sufficient, says Ferrufino.

The charging infrastructure would currently remove the need for a larger range. In addition, Ferrufino says that the range that BMW gives its EVs strongly depends on the segment in which the car operates. For example, an electric car that is more aimed at urban use would not have to have a range of 600 kilometers.
