BMW X2: soon the next well-known X recipe

This time it was pressed flat

As a car manufacturer, you can rake in larger profit margins relatively easily with SUVs and crossovers than with traditional hatchbacks or station wagons. So it’s no wonder that BMW has been selling derivative models such as the X4 and X6 in addition to ‘conventional’ SUVs such as the X3 and X5 for years. And then the X2? That too will soon be a high-legged one with a steeply sloping roofline.

The X2 was always a somewhat strange bird within BMW’s X family. X models with an even number at BMW normally have a steeply sloping roofline. For example, the BMW X4 is the ‘coupé alternative’ of the X3 and the X6 is comparable to the X5. But the X2 was never an X1 with a steeper roofline. In fact, the car was noticeably less ‘SUV’ than the X1 and could almost be characterized as a high-on-the-legs hatchback. That will change with the arrival of the new BMW X2.

The new BMW X2 has less of a traditional hatchback shape than the current one.

The new BMW X2 will be a more dynamically lined model that you can see as a sportier alternative to the X1. The new BMW X2 naturally shares its technology with the brand new X1. The X1 is also available for the first time with a fully electric powertrain, so there will not only be X2s with combustion engines, but there will also be an electric iX2. That is more than a suspicion, because we have already received photos of that electric iX2. The BMW X2 has a roofline that slopes relatively sharply from the B-pillar and ends in a stubborn-looking tailgate.

In these photos we seem to see the sporty top version: the M35i. It will most likely have the same powertrain as the eponymous version of the X1. So count on a 300 hp and 400 Nm strong 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engine that is connected to a seven-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. As the M35i, the BMW X1 sprints from standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds. You can also count on the arrival of a plug-in hybrid version.

We expect the new BMW X2 to arrive at Dutch dealers in the middle of next year.
