BMW XM crashes during record attempt on Pikes Peak

The American branch of BMW has tried to break the record time of the Lamborghini Urus with the XM Label Red. That did not go as hoped, to say the least, but there will be a new attempt.

With the XM Label Red, BMW has created a very capable SUV – at least on paper. The plug-in hybrid powertrain with a biturbo 4.4-liter V8 as its beating heart pumps no less than 748 hp system power to all four wheels. There is therefore no shortage of speed: the colossus accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reaches an optional top speed of 290 km/h. But, as we’ve already said, it’s a colossus. Keeping so much power and weight within the limits is quite a challenge.

BMW itself is now showing this – surprisingly enough. Last summer, a BMW-backed record attempt was made with the XM Label Red, in which they tried to become the fastest SUV ever on Pikes Peak. That record is 10 minutes and 32 seconds and is held by the Lamborghini Urus Performante. Unfortunately, things didn’t go completely well and BMW’s own driving instructor Matt Mullins lost control of the car. The result of a huge understeer moment: the XM crashed into a tree and rolled over. Fortunately, Mullins was unharmed.

Why are we seeing the images now? Well, this is ‘part 1’, ‘part 2’ is expected tomorrow and it will probably turn out that the XM Label Red has become the new record holder in a second attempt. The crash can be seen at 6:50 PM:
