Boost for Nyck de Vries: ‘I wanted to see this’

The Dutch Formula 1 driver Nyck de Vries entered the race weekend in Monaco with the necessary pressure and came out in one piece. Red Bull CEO Dr. Helmut Marko praises him, although he also remains critical.

Nyck de Vries showed the necessary self-knowledge in the run-up to the race weekend in Monaco. He admitted that things have not exactly gone smoothly in his first Formula 1 season so far. “As a driver you always fight a species for survival and you always have to deliver to continue your career successfully,” he said. Well, he did that fighting in Monaco. Although it was not necessarily very visible, De Vries drove a fairly stable race. That is – not entirely unimportant – also the person to whom De Vries mainly owes his F1 spot; Helmut Marko: “This was by far his best weekend for AlphaTauri,” said the Austrian Motorsport.com. “Nyck was much closer to Yuki (Tsunoda, ed.) than before. I wanted to see this from him.”

A nice boost for De Vries, such an assessment of the Red Bull CEO. However, he is certainly not out of the danger zone yet. Marko: “We want to see more, because we thought we brought in someone with some experience, ready to challenge Yuki, but that hasn’t happened yet. That’s the most important thing now,” it sounds critical. For the time being, according to Marko, there is no reason to prepare a replacement behind the scenes and there is also no deadline for De Vries. “We look at performance. We intervene if necessary, but now we do nothing.”
