A small ray of hope for the many car manufacturers plagued by chip shortages: supplier Bosch has opened a gigantic chip factory in Dresden.
The new German factory involves an investment of no less than 1 billion euros, the largest ever for 130-year-old Bosch. Initially chips will be made for Bosch power tools, but from September microchips will also be made for the automotive industry. That is three months earlier than originally predicted.
Bosch mentions an interesting fact: according to the manufacturer chips for the car industry are the highest achievable in this area. According to the Germans, this is because in cars they are exposed to large temperature changes and a life full of vibrations, which is much less the case in other applications.
Although Bosch does not have to worry about the demand for the time being, the company also knows that the acute shortage in the world market cannot be solved by one factory. The German parts manufacturer previously indicated that the chip shortage will remain for the time being.
