The Witness is finally available for the Mac. Since its release last year, the game has been inundated with appreciation from the press and players for the design of the puzzles and the environment in which the game takes place. The Witness is available for 39.99 euros and works on Apple computers with macOS 10.11.6 or newer. First check if you have at least 4GB of RAM and 5GB of free storage space to install the game. The game works with Apple’s Metal technology.
The Witness puts you as a player on a mysterious island that looks truly stunning thanks to its colorful and cartoony graphic style. On the island you will always come across panels that form the puzzles. The idea is very simple, because you always draw a line from the beginning to the end, which initiates subsequent puzzles or objects in the environment.
Simple puzzles, brain teasers in progress
Where the game starts simple, it quickly becomes enormously challenging. Because as a player you can come and go wherever you want, you regularly run into puzzles that you do not understand because there are strange symbols on them. How you draw a line of the puzzle, you do on the basis of those symbols. You will therefore have to learn what they mean before applying them. And even then they are real brain teasers, especially when they are combined.
In total there are more than 500 such puzzles to be found. The great thing about The Witness is that the game takes its players seriously. The island assumes that you are smart enough to solve the puzzles and does not take you by the hand. That is sometimes frustrating, but the feeling when you finally see the solution to a difficult puzzle is indescribable. And the longer you spend with the game, the more you learn to appreciate the game world itself. Especially when his secrets suddenly reveal themselves to you.
iOS version still on the way
The Witness is one of the very best puzzle games of the past ten years. The developers have been working on an iOS version for a long time, but when it will come is unknown. This week one of the makers dropped on Twitter know that that version is still being worked on. The puzzles could work very well on a touchscreen, but the game is probably still too heavy graphically. Walking around the island yourself may also be difficult on an iPhone. In that respect, the iOS version may soon be quite different from the version on the Mac. The game is now in the Mac App Store but will also be released on the Mac on Steam in a few weeks.
