Electrifying made easier

The British Swindon Powertrain markets a battery pack for both smaller manufacturers of passenger cars and commercial vehicles and private individuals. The company believes its new product is the first of its kind, which would mean that electrifying classics – such as a 911 – should be a lot easier from now on.
When electrifying a car that normally has an internal combustion engine powertrain, finding the right battery pack has been quite a challenge until now. For manufacturers with small production volumes, developing their own battery pack is simply too expensive, while recycled battery packs from other EVs are often difficult to fit. In addition, it is difficult to make custom battery packs from used batteries, especially if you want to make multiple packs with a similar lifespan.
Swindon Powertrain has come up with something for that. To complement its range of electric motors, the British – who previously developed Formula 1 engines and recently developed this Porsche’s freak engine – are now launching a lithium-ion battery pack on the market. It comes in two versions: one with a net capacity of 28 kWh and the other with 55 kWh. Both packages are 1 meter long and 42 cm wide. The smaller variant is 37.5 cm high, the larger 61.5 cm. They weigh 190 and 350 kg respectively.
All packages feature a built-in battery management system and liquid cooling and come with a 12 month warranty. In any case, they are directly applicable with the electric motors that you can buy from the manufacturer. Swindon Powertrain states that it not only supplies to any vehicle builder with a small, medium or large production volume, but also to private individuals who want to buy a single battery.
If your fingers are already itching at the idea of converting a car into an EV yourself, Swindon Powertrain can help you with its new product from now on. Prices for the Universal Vehicle Battery Pack are £19,500 for the small version and £32,000 for the large version (excluding taxes). According to the current exchange rate, that is €22,298 and €36,592 respectively. And then you still have to choose the matching engine…
