Those who regularly visit AutoWeek will undoubtedly know that we don’t just have a nose for what is happening in the Dutch or European car landscape. For the protagonist in this article, we travel via a very short stopover in the United States to China, the country that launches a new EV at every turn.

Those who are a little familiar with historic Buick models will undoubtedly know that the brand applied the Electra designation to various high-ranking models from the 1950s to the early 1990s. In 2023, Buick sticks the label in its important market China on fully electric models. We previously wrote about the Electra E5 and now take a bird’s eye view of a second new electric Buick of the Electra family: the Electra E4.

Just like the Electra E5, AutoWeek was able to show you the Electra E4 well before its official unveiling. Buick has now shown it itself, although it is keeping extensive technical specifications under wraps for a while. Information that AutoWeek retrieved from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology showed that the Electra E4 is 4.82 meters long and has a wheelbase of 2.95 meters. In terms of format, it is more or less comparable to the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, although the Electra E4 has a significantly more sloping roofline.

Like the Buick Electra E5, the more dynamically designed Electra E4 is based on GM’s Ultium platform, a modular EV base that you will also find under the GMC Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Celestiq, Chevrolet Blazer, Equinox and Silverado EV and even the Honda Prologue . The design of the Electra E4 clearly builds on that of the Electra-X Concept of which it is actually the production version. Buick prides itself on the presence of a glass roof with an area of 1.2 square meters and the huge 30-inch wide curved display that functions as a digital instrumentation and infotainment screen. The Electra E4 was developed by the Chinese joint venture SAIC-GM and will most likely remain in China.

Would you find this Buick Electra E4 an interesting alternative to one of the many electric SUVs that you can already buy in the Netherlands? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
