Busier on the road in 2021, but still far from normal

It was busier on the road this year than last year, but still nowhere near the level before the corona pandemic. This is apparent from an analysis by the ANWB.

Traffic congestion decreased by 57 percent in 2021 compared to 2019, the ANWB reported on Wednesday. In 2020, traffic congestion had fallen by 63 percent compared to that year. According to the ANWB, 2019 still saw significant growth in mobility.

During the morning rush hour, the indicator for commuting, traffic was limited last year because people worked from home en masse, just like last year. “As a result, road users were hardly inconvenienced by traffic jams between 06:00 and 09:00,” according to the ANWB. October was the busiest month on the road this year. The ANWB calls it remarkable that the morning rush hour returned after the urgent home work advice expired. In the meantime, however, it has clearly become quieter on working days, now that working from home is again the motto.

During the day, there was only a slight decrease in the number of traffic jams in the past year. In the month of July it was even busier than in other years, the ANWB reports. “It was remarkably busy on the Dutch roads last summer and autumn, especially on Fridays. Many Dutch people went out for a few days.” Most traffic jams this year were in South Holland (especially in the Rotterdam region) and North Brabant.
