Don’t have an OV chip card because you don’t travel much by public transport? A one-time chip card can be useful if you occasionally make a trip, for example by train.
Disposable card with chip
The one-time chip card is a paper card with chip. The card is also known as a disposable card. You can buy the chip card in the bus or tram, from the driver or ticket seller. If you travel by train or metro, buy the ticket before boarding at the machine of the train or metro operator.
Pay close attention to the following points:
- You pay a surcharge for most products per one-time chip card. With the NS, for example, you pay a standard euro on top of the normal fare.
- Checking in and out is done in the same way as with an OV chip card. We describe this later in the course.
Buy one-time card
So if you travel once by bus or tram, you buy a one-time ticket on the spot. If you travel by train or metro, you buy the ticket in advance. Actually like before. Now only no longer at the counter, but at a special machine that is located at all stations.
For a train ticket this works as follows:
- You are in front of the machine. The screen shows three options in blue rectangles.
- One way
Are you traveling to another station, but you don’t have to return the same day? Then you choose a single ticket. - Day return
On the same day and back to another station, then you opt for a return ticket. - Other products
There are other products here, such as a bicycle ticket if you want to take a bicycle with you on the train.
- One way
- Choose one of the options by tapping on it. Usually this will be a day return.
- Then make the choice for the end station. Tap the first letter of the endpoint name. If necessary, the second letter and then choose the drive.
- A number of options are already selected by default, but can be adjusted.
- The NS assumes that you buy a ticket for one person. Do you want to buy multiple tickets? Tap the plus sign after the number 1.
- By default, the option to travel with the cheaper second class is selected. Optionally tap 1e class to change this.
- The NS assumes that the ticket must be valid today. If you already buy a ticket for another day, tap Valid today and tap the correct day. This is possible up to eight days in the future.
- The NS machines have various payment options. Paying with a debit card is always possible. Sometimes you can also pay with a credit card or cash, but not always. So assume payment by debit card.
- At an NS machine with different payment options, first tap Debit card.
- The payment part is on the right side of the machine. Insert the debit card into the slot here and follow the instructions. So enter the pin code, press OK and remove the card from the slot when it says ‘Remove card’.
- Do not forget to take the purchased ticket from the machine and check in with it before boarding the train.
