BYD overtakes Tesla as the largest manufacturer of electric cars

Chinese BYD has succeeded; it has sold more fully electric cars than regular leader Tesla. This still concerns quarterly figures. Viewed over the whole of 2023, Tesla was still the largest.

Early last year it became clear that BYD was hot on Tesla’s heels as the world’s largest manufacturer of fully electric cars. In October, analysts expected BYD to become the largest this year. In the end, it didn’t happen fast enough, as could have been expected on Tuesday based on BYD’s figures for the last quarter. Yet BYD passed Tesla at the last minute on a quarterly basis, according to… The Financial Times had a less successful last quarter.

According to that medium, Tesla delivered a record number of more than 484,000 cars in Q4, but BYD delivered around 526,000 units. For the first time, BYD was a larger manufacturer of fully electric cars than Tesla. With this momentum, BYD has a good chance of becoming the largest overall in 2024. BYD has been the largest manufacturer of plug-in cars worldwide for some time now, because in addition to fully electric cars, it also sells a huge number of plug-in hybrid cars, especially in its home country of China.

Here in the Netherlands, BYD is not yet nearly as successful as Tesla. It sold about 1,230 passenger cars here last year, Tesla sold more than 21,500. BYD has only been active here for a short time and in 2023 it mainly relied on the Atto 3. BYD’s Dolphin, Seal and Seal U are joining the ranks and you can bet that more news will come from BYD in the near future. By the way, it’s going full steam ahead Build Your Dreams The company also builds passenger cars in Europe.
