Series within a series

Electric, coupe SUV, China. These are pretty much all the trends that are currently ruling the automotive world, and this new BYD Sea Lion 07 unites them all.
The BYD Sea Lion 07 was reportedly presented at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China, but according to typical Chinese custom, that certainly does not mean that we now know everything about the car. Detective-like colleague Lars Krijgsman dug up the above images from a corner of the internet that the undersigned would rather not visit, but the words that accompany them do not make us much wiser, even with Google Translate. ‘Unlocks the “new” style of the ocean’, one sentence belts out. “Embracing the flowing waves and discovering new places,” another bellows silently to us.
What does seem clear is that this device is called ‘BYD Sea Lion 07′. This means we know one thing for sure: this is a model from BYD’s so-called Ocean Series. These cars are characterized by voluptuous lines (although, Dolphin…) and are named after animals related to the sea, such as Seagull, Dolphin and Seal. And so Sea Lion, or sea lion. The ’07’ is interesting because it raises the expectation that other Sea Lions will also arrive. According to Car News China, this is the case and we can expect separate series within the Ocean Series model series, which would certainly not make things any clearer.

In any case, what can be said about the car itself is that it is a so-called ‘Coupé SUV’, i.e. an SUV with a strongly sloping roofline. With that roof and the way it seems to rest on the carriage, it is somewhat reminiscent of a Volkswagen ID5, although no one will confuse the two. The nose of the ‘sea lion’ is very similar to that of the Seal – just like in real life, actually – and so are the taillights. The BYD Sea Lion 07 is also reminiscent of another fresh SUV from the brand, the BYD Seal U. That is in fact the SUV version of the Seal that we already know as a sedan. The Seal U has a more traditional shape. Door handles, windows and wheel arches show that the Sea Lion 07 is not just a sharper version of the Seal U, but a truly special model.
With its relatively streamlined shape, the BYD Sea Lion 07 is also reminiscent of another fresh BYD, which is scheduled to come to Europe. However, the BYD Song L is not an Ocean Series model, but comes from the Dynasty Series model range, just like the Han, the Tang and the Atto 3. The similarity between all these models is particularly clear at the front, because here they all share the somewhat ‘winged’ combination of headlights and (closed) grille. The BYD Song L is also a lot lower and therefore less SUV-like than the Sea Lion.
As soon as we find out more about the BYD Sea Lion 07, you will of course know too.
