BYD will soon expand its model range in the Netherlands with the Seal U. The BYD Seal U is an electric SUV with a range of 500 kilometers that will make its European debut during the IAA in Munich.

AutoWeek already reported in July that BYD is adding a new electric SUV to its European delivery range: the Seal U. At the time, we were still relying on information from German media and on a press release apparently thrown out too early by BYD, which was taken offline shortly after publication. fetched. Now the confirmation is completely official: the electric BYD Seal U is coming to Europe and will soon shine on the exhibition floor of the IAA in Munich.

The BYD Seal U is a 4.78 meter long electric SUV that will come to Europe in at least two versions, each with its own powertrain. There will be a Comfort variant with a 71.8 kWh variant of BYD’s so-called Blade Battery, which is good for an electric range of 420 kilometers. Above that comes the Design version with a larger battery pack and a longer range. This has an 87 kWh battery pack and should be good for a range of 500 kilometers. Entry-level version Comfort offers a charging capacity of 115 kW. As a Design, the BYD Seal U can charge up to 140 kW fast. Regardless of the chosen version, the BYD Seal U has a 218 hp electric motor that drives the front wheels. The Seal U sprints from standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in about 10 seconds. Its top speed: 175 km/h.

The BYD Seal U shares most of its name with the Seal, but is basically an improved version of the BYD Song Plus. That is striking. After all, the Song Plus was rather a car that was part of BYD’s Dynasty model family that also includes cars like the Han and Tang. The further development of that car, now called Seal U, shows less external similarities with models from the Dynasty series and visually creeps towards the cars from the Ocean series. You already know the Ocean series in the Netherlands from the Seal mentioned above, but also from the Dolphin. The ‘U’ in ‘Seal U’ stands for Utility. It is, after all, an SUV-like.

The IAA in Munich, which is open from 5 to 10 September, is the stage on which the Seal U will make its European public debut. The car should be on the market in the first quarter of 2024.
