They certainly don’t sit still at the European branch of the Chinese BYD. The brand already has a range of five different models here, but the first copies of the next batch have already arrived in the Netherlands. It concerns the BYD Song Plus EV and the Denza D9, which is not actually BYD.

BYD is fairly new in the Netherlands, but a true giant in China. In short, the brand can choose at will from the many, many cars that are sold there, although it is of course a bit more complicated than that. For European homologation – and to prevent image damage – there is often a lot of tinkering with, for example, the safety of the cars, while BYD is now thinking carefully about which models could score well here.

In this way, since the launch of the brand in 2022, we have been introduced to the Han, the Tang and the Atto 3, followed this year by the Seal and the Dolphin, a video of which has been online since yesterday. Back in the Netherlands, however, our eye literally fell on a BYD model that was still unknown here: the BYD Song Plus EV.

Please note: there is still absolutely no official confirmation that this SUV will be fed here. BYD only says that there is more to come, but certainly does not go into details. However, based on the fact that there are no fewer than three different Song Plus EVs in the Netherlands, we can conclude that the model is at least being seriously considered for the European market. Why not, because as a medium-sized SUV, the car fits perfectly between the compact Atto 3 and the large Tang.

BYD Song Plus

The BYD Song Plus, like the Han and the Tang, is a car from BYD’s so-called Dynasty model series. It appeared on the market in 2020 as a slightly lower and sportier version of the slightly older Song Pro. The Song Plus is available with combustion engines and as a fully electric Song Plus EV. That car was presented with a Tang-like nose, a version that we found in the Netherlands in an uncamouflaged form. The camouflaged cars are songs from after the facelift already presented in China. In the photo gallery you will therefore also find images of an uncamouflaged facelift Song Plus EV. The facelift is quite extensive and provides the BYD Song with a nose in the style of the Seal, with which we can actually catch BYD with some consistency in exterior design for the first time. The rear lights are also clearly different from before.

With a length of about 4.70, the BYD Song Plus is comparable in size to cars such as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, although it has a more traditional SUV body. In China, the Song Plus EV reportedly comes with a 72 kWh battery, but it is also possible that BYD will use the Seal’s 82 kWh package. That car will travel 570 kilometers with that, the higher Song Plus undoubtedly a little less. By the way, it is certainly not said that BYD will stick to the name ‘Song Plus’ with a European introduction. In the case of the Han, the Tang, the Seal and the Dolphin the same name is used everywhere, but ‘Atto 3’ is for export countries.

Denza D9

As a bonus, we found another BYD product unknown here in the same Dutch parking lot, the Denza D9. Denza is a separate brand within BYD and the D9 is a super luxury passenger bus in the style of the Toyota Alphard and the Lexus LM, which will also be launched in some European countries. Colleague Lars previously noted that the Denza D9 appears in a European patent application, so the idea of a European career is not entirely new. However, it may also be a good thing that this one copy is only used for internal purposes here in the Netherlands. After all, the headquarters of BYD Europe is located here, which also explains why the new BYDs are located on Dutch territory in the first place. The D9 photographed is a plug-in hybrid, but a fully electric version also exists.
