Cadillac takes to the air. At gadget fair CES, the brand presents something it has never done before: a drone for passengers. With this Cadillac wants to offer an additional mobility concept for the city.
The flying Cadillac, called VTOL, made its debut in a General Motors video. The drone is fully autonomous and has an Ultium battery pack on board. An electric motor with an output of 90 kW (122 hp) drives four rotors for the necessary thrust. The top speed of the fully autonomous drone is 88 km / h. The vehicle itself flies to permanent landing sites spread throughout the city. The drone has room for one person, who has a panoramic view of the city thanks to a large glass surface. The video already mentions a variant for two people.
In addition to the drone, Cadillac showed another concept: an autonomous shuttle that shows similarities in design to the Cruise Origin, also a GM product. This vehicle does not have a name yet, but according to Cadillac it will be ‘coming soon’. In any case, the video shows that the Cadillac is a lot more luxurious than the Origin, partly thanks to the luxurious lounge chairs that have been visible for a short while. According to General Motors, the two vehicles are a first look at what “Cadillac autonomy and luxury may look like in the near future.” The concern sees air transport as an important step in future mobility solutions. Cadillac’s drone and shuttle currently only exist as animation in the video. Whether and when the two may reach the production stage is not yet known.
