In iOS 18, calling on your iPhone will be different and you will get a number of new features. Here’s what you need to know.
Calling will be different in iOS 18 on your iPhone: this is what will change
In iOS 18, many new features will come to your iPhone and quite a few things will change. Also in calling, functions will be changed and a number of new ones will be added. These are the most important changes!
Record phone call
One feature that is currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max (running iOS 18.1) is phone call recording. So right now, the feature is not available on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and earlier devices. It is likely coming in the future.
To record a phone call, follow the steps below:
- Open the Phone app;
- Call one of your contacts;
- Tap the record button at the top left.
When you press the button, everyone (including the person you are calling) will hear that the conversation is being recorded. No further permission is requested. So if you do not want the conversation to be recorded, you must end the call. The audio file is also saved in the Notes app.
Transcription and summaries
The phone calls you have recorded will be in the Notes app. The conversations will be transcribed automatically. It is even possible to have the iPhone automatically make a summary. However, your iPhone must support Apple Intelligence for this. These are the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 16.
Phone call search history
In iOS 18, a search function has appeared that now allows you to search all recent conversations. This means you can also search for names and phone numbers in this tab.
Change SIM card
If you have two SIM cards in your iPhone, it used to be quite cumbersome to switch them. You have to go to ‘Mobile Network’ in the ‘Settings’ of your device and switch the active SIM card there.
This will be easier in iOS 18. You can then tap the ‘Mobile Data’ bubble from the Control Panel. Then you hold the option and you can switch between the available SIM cards.
Contacts suggestions
If you tap ‘Phone > Keypad’ you can type a phone number. When you start typing, the app will automatically come up with suggestions from your contacts list. It is even possible to type the name as predictive text (T9) just like before. For example, do you want to call ‘Hans’? Then you type 4, 2, 6, 7.
