Caravan and motorhome companies have delivered more than 20,000 new and second-hand motorhomes and caravans in the first five months of 2021, Bovag and RDC report.
Up to and including May, an all-time record of 1,655 new and 7,677 used motorhomes were sold. In both cases this is more than 60 percent more than a year earlier. Also 6,640 second-hand caravans were delivered, a quarter more than in 2020. Since 2009, not so many used caravans have been sold by the specialist trade. New caravans are also on the rise. There was a growth of more than 34 percent. The last time more than 4,000 new caravans were sold in the first five months of the year was in 2012.
The Netherlands now has more caravans and motorhomes than ever. On June 1, there were 568,722 registered. That is 17,500 more than a year and a half ago. Last month, the 150,000th motorhome was registered in the Netherlands, approximately double the number ten years ago.
The increasing popularity of motorhomes in particular was already clearly visible last year. The pandemic also played a role in this. More people wanted to be able to easily take a break in their own country and saw the camper as the perfect means, the closed toilet areas on campsites also played a part in this. In addition, motorhomes were also used as a mobile workplace. Incidentally, motorhomes have not only become more popular in the age categories from which you would expect it, because young people are also increasingly opting for a motorhome.
