Can you go on holiday with an electric car?

Taking an electric car on holiday sometimes requires some extra planning

You see more and more electric cars and there will come a time when you will also get one. Can you go on holiday with an electric car? And what about abroad? AutoWeek will find out.

A car is made for many purposes. And one of them is vacation. Can you also go on holiday with an electric car? Secure! We look at a few aspects that you might consider.

In the Netherlands

Staying reasonably close to home is of course easy. And within the Netherlands you can easily go on holiday with an electric car. There is a well-covered network of charging stations and you can also use the highway reasonably well. Moreover, the distances are not that great. It is worth checking before your route where charging stations are near your holiday destination, especially if you are at a campsite or a park. But usually it works out. Otherwise, you can charge the car, for example, when you go shopping.

Going on holiday abroad with an electric car

If you go beyond the borders, it is useful to plan where you can (fast) charge during the trip. You can do this with various apps, such as Chargemap. Plugsurfing of Pump. This allows you to select the type of car and the destination. The app calculates a route and optimal charging points. Usually these are fast chargers. Our advice is to always take some (more) margin when charging, especially in mountainous areas. Then you always have some margin if a charger is broken. Because that also wants to happen. Especially in the countries around the Mediterranean, the charging stations are placed less generously than in our country.

Also check whether the charge card works abroad. Some apps also allow you to pay for charging with your phone. Or request an extra pass from another provider. Not every charger works with every card. Sometimes you can also start a charging session online and pay by scanning a QR code on the charging station.

To winter sports with your electric car

You need special attention when the trip goes to winter sports. Then you should of course also think of all-season tires or winter tires and snow chains. During the trip you have to take colder temperatures into account. And that means your battery will run out faster. Then plan your charging stops in time!

You carry something with you during the holidays

If you are going to choose an electric car and you have a caravan, boat, horse trailer or other trailer for your camping equipment, also check whether the electric car of your choice can be fitted with a tow bar or whether you can pull it sufficiently. Some electric cars cannot tow a trailer, but luckily you will find cars in every class that can.

And here too it applies that with a trailer, especially with a larger one such as a caravan or horse trailer, the battery will run out faster. We will give more tips in another article to get the most out of your battery.
