Answer
Insomnia or difficulty sleeping is a common problem that can have many causes. Many elements and factors play a role in it. Some of these are: stress, anxiety, tendency to worry, trying to keep everything under control, extreme perfectionism, bad or irregular sleeping habits. Also having an underlying physical or psychological condition, or the medication to combat such a disorder, or a number of substances such as coffee, tea, chocolate or drugs, can cause you to sleep worse. Sometimes sleeping problems are a symptom of an underlying problem. But people are also born with a predisposition to be able to sleep and this goes a bit more smoothly for some than for others. Also living at a fast pace, with a particular emphasis on performing and going on and on, can induce sleep problems.
It is very important for treatment to find out the cause of the sleeping problem, if there is one. This can often be done through a conversation with the patient, in others a sleep study is needed to make the correct diagnosis.
If the diagnosis is known, we can often treat sleep problems by eliminating the cause. If no cause is found, people with sleeping problems often benefit from a sleep training course. With the help of techniques from cognitive and behavioral therapy, the problem of poor sleep is tackled in a structured way in groups. For a number of patients, this approach does not work and requires medication and various treatment options. The most suitable remedy is best determined on the basis of an individual consultation with a sleep doctor.
