Do you want to cancel your iCloud subscription, for example because you bought cloud storage elsewhere? Which can! In this article we show you how to get rid of the subscription.
Cancel iCloud subscription in 4 steps
iCloud is Apple’s default solution for storing files, photos, videos, and more. These files are in the cloud so you can access them anytime, anywhere – as long as you have an internet connection.
This is of course very nice, but it costs money and you may prefer to spend your euros elsewhere. Whatever your reasons, canceling an iCloud subscription is pretty simple:
- Grab your iPhone and open the Settings app;
- Tap your name at the top, choose iCloud and press Manage Storage;
- Select ‘iCloud Storage’ and choose ‘Change Storage Plan’;
- Choose another plan and tap Done.
So it is not possible to delete your iCloud completely. Instead, you can “downgrade,” ie choose a plan with less storage. If you no longer want to pay monthly for iCloud, choose the free package with 5GB storage space here.
Make sure that you have a maximum of 5GB of files on your iCloud, otherwise you will get error messages. It is therefore best to cancel the iCloud subscription when you have already bought storage elsewhere.
Cancel iCloud subscription on a Mac
Are you unable to cancel your iCloud subscription via your iPhone for some reason? Then ‘just’ grab your Mac:
- From the Apple menu, choose ‘System Preferences’ and click on ‘Apple ID’;
- Select ‘iCloud’, choose ‘Manage’ and go to ‘Change storage plan’;
- Press ‘Downgrade options’ and now enter your Apple ID subscription password;
- Choose ‘Manage’ and select the subscription you want;
- All settled? Press ‘Done’ to close.
It works about the same on a Windows PC, but slightly different. To do this, first open iCloud for Windows and select ‘Change storage plan’ in the ‘Storage’ menu.
You can then select a new iCloud subscription under ‘Downgrade options’. You’ll still need to enter your Apple ID password in between to confirm it’s you.
More about iCloud
iCloud will be renamed as of iOS 15. iCloud Plus continues largely in the same vein, but introduces Private Relay. This function is technically complicated, but the bottom line is that you will soon be able to surf the internet much more securely and anonymously.
It is therefore also compared to a VPN, although it does not quite cover the load. iOS 15 will be released in the fall of 2021, simultaneously with the introduction of the iPhone 13.
