Can’t open many websites? This is what’s going on

Do certain websites give a 500 error? Can’t see certain images? Then you are not alone because the problem lies with the company Cloudflare. This is what’s going on.

Update 9:25 AM: Cloudlfare has implemented a solution and is monitoring the results. Gradually, many websites will (partly) start working again. We have updated this article.

How does Cloudflare work?

cloudflare is an American company that provides Internet services to websites. Think of DNS resolvers, but also protection against, among other things, DDoS attacks and you can use a secure connection. The Hypernode website explains Cloudflare’s services in very simple language:

Cloudflare placed their own service between the website and the web server in the form of a huge global network. Visitors to websites no longer communicate directly with the server, but with the Cloudflare network, which has already saved all information from the website once and loads it per location. Suppose a website is hosted in Germany and someone from America tries to connect to this website, then the request has to travel a huge distance between the website and the web server. Cloudflare solves this by providing a huge network of servers around the world. That person from America no longer needs to connect completely to a server from Germany, but does this with the nearest Cloudflare server somewhere in America.

Cloudflare suffers from outage

As soon as Cloudflare goes down, all those websites that use their services are going to have to deal with outages. And that’s what’s going on now. We are now also encountering these problems in the editorial office. Many images in our cms are currently not working, we cannot consult certain websites that use Cloudflare’s services, only our coffee machine is still working properly.

Cloudflare is aware of the issues, the company reported on Twitter, and is working on a fix. On the Cloudflare status website can be seen that the company has found the problem and is rolling out an update: “The next update is expected in 15 minutes.”
