Car insurance has become more expensive

Last year we drove fewer kilometers and there were fewer accidents, so you would expect that to have a positive effect on the rates of car insurance. Nothing is less true. We have just started paying more.

It turns out from an analysis from comparison site Independer. You would think that fewer damage claims, lower premiums. But it doesn’t work that way, they know at Independer. “The car premium is based on long-term risk analyzes. Historical damage statistics are looked at. After a major storm with a lot of damage, the premium will not go up immediately,” says insurance expert Suzan Samson of Independer. She continues: “Who knows we see effect if the corona crisis continues for a long time. Or if we continue to work from home after the crisis, so that we are less on the road. But we will at least see an increase in 2020. “

Car owners in the age category 25-34 are the best off. For them, the premium increased on average by only 3.8 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The largest increase of 6.2 percent can be seen in the 35-44 age group. Young people in the 18-24 age group continue to pay the top prize. With an annual premium of € 1,643.94 on average in 2020, they pay no less than € 722.55 more than the age group above them.

Brand dependent

How much premium you pay also largely depends on the make of your car. Some car brands simply attract more reckless drivers than others, because this is clearly reflected in damage statistics. Also, drivers of one car brand usually drive much more kilometers than another, with a greater risk of damage as a result. It may also be that repairs are much more expensive with one brand than with another. In short, there are many aspects that are taken into account.

In that respect, BMW drivers will be the worst in 2020. For them, the premium increased by 8.1 percent on average. With an average of € 1,352 they also pay the highest premium per year. The cheapest cars to insure come from Toyota. These costs on average insured € 728 on an annual basis.
