Car insurance is on average the most expensive in The Hague

The costs of car insurance are highly dependent on where you live. Most are well aware of that. Autoverzekering.nl mapped out where you spend the most and the cheapest for the big cities.

The Hague is the most expensive city in the Netherlands to take out car insurance. Car insurance in the royal city is about € 120 more expensive annually than Groningen, the cheapest city. Anyone living in The Hague spends an average of around € 420 per year in premiums. It is the second year in a row that The Hague is the most expensive city to insure a car. According to Autoverzekering.nl this could possibly be due to increasing crime rates. In The Hague, there has been an increase in the number of car thefts and burglaries in cars since 2017, while there has been a slight decrease nationally.

Another reason why The Hague is once again at the top of the list is the number of traffic accidents. “That is remarkably high,” explains Frederik van Veen of the comparison site. “The total number of accidents may have decreased slightly in the past year, mainly due to the influence of corona, but The Hague still scores well above the average here. Insurers therefore see the South Holland capital as a risky city, which is reflected in their premiums by residents. “Other cities where it is on average expensive to take out car insurance are Amsterdam (place 2) and Utrecht (place 3). residents of another large city, there is good news, as Maastricht was still top of the list of most expensive cities two years ago, but since 2019 there have been 33 percent fewer thefts and 56 percent fewer burglaries, putting the Limburg city in fourth place. Den Bosch, Arnhem, Haarlem, Lelystad, Zwolle, Middelburg, Assen, Leeuwarden and Groningen will follow – in that order – thereafter.
