Car insurers may introduce new claims handling

Insurers may jointly introduce a scheme to settle damage to motor vehicles faster and easier. The Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) has determined this. Thanks to the new scheme, customers will soon also be able to be helped by their own insurer if they have a claim.

Nowadays, consumers with statutory liability insurance (WA) often have to recover the damage themselves from the insurer of the perpetrator. In practice, it appears that customers prefer to be served by their own insurer. If the consumer chooses this in the future, insurers will settle the damage among themselves. The direct contact should ensure faster claims settlement.

The Dutch Association of Insurers is going to make some adjustments to its company scheme for the new scheme. These should make it clear that the consumer can choose between the two options and ensure that new insurers can easily join the scheme.

The new scheme is likely to take effect in mid-2021. On December 16, the new approach will be presented to the general meeting of members of the insurance association.
