As a child, Erik de Zwart was already a train geek, a hobby that has now completely run over. But he is also fond of his Porsche 911, a keeper for life.
In addition to miniature trains, do you also have miniature cars?
“It is still quite difficult to find model cars that fit my train track. If you look around, you will mainly come across extravagant models: Porsche, Maserati and Ferrari. That’s nice if you’re a fan of it, but I want to keep my train track as realistic as possible. That’s why I’m mainly looking for cars from the 80s and 90s, of which I now have a number. ”
Is your car love the same as your train love?
“Not that, but I do like beautiful cars. In the garage is now a 911 from 2005, of which I am the first owner. A fantastic car that I will never get rid of. For daily use, I have had a Range Rover for three years, the most decadent you can have. At my house in Ibiza there is an older Range Rover and a Jeep. ”
How do you describe your driving style?
“I like to ride fast. When I’m in the Porsche, I love that I always have enough gas to get away. I also enjoy long rides. Nice cruising to Austria or Switzerland, those are the nicer trips. Last year I brought my Jeep myself from the Netherlands to Ibiza, via Barcelona and nearby on the boat. ”
Which car were you allowed to call yours first?
“I used to drive a lot in my mother’s Mini, until it was flattened. Then I bought a Chrysler-Simca, an incredible oil boat. The next car was a Honda Civic. I drove from Amsterdam up and down to my first DJ job in Hilversum. ”
Which purchase was top and which was a flop?
“After the Civic, I bought a new Honda Prelude. That was a Monday morning thing, and something else always broke down. After that I had a few nice BMWs, a nice Mercedes 500 SL, a Porsche 911 Carrera and a Cayenne, but after a while it was passed over. Then I switched to Range Rover. ”
How are you sitting in your car?
“Comfortable. With your back straight and everything within reach, the mirrors properly adjusted, the radio on. I try to stay away from my phone as much as possible while driving. I do use Flitsmeister. I find that quite useful. I usually also have the navigation on, because then you immediately see where there are traffic jams. ”
Do you still have a dream car?
“I am still silently in love with a Ferrari. A friend of mine bought one two years ago, with which he participated in the Mille Miglia. He could not drive him back to the Netherlands himself and then I gave him a helping hand. It is funny that people in Germany step aside for you when you arrive in such a car, while in the Netherlands they deliberately drive for you. That is actually too childish for words. ”
