One repair that many people fear because of the cost is a worn clutch. We explain how it works and why replacement is expensive.
A worn clutch is not difficult to spot. For example, you want to accelerate and accelerate. Initially, the engine revs little, but suddenly the revs shoot up without the car accelerating any further. That is when it becomes abundantly clear that the clutch is worn out. The name says it all: a clutch connects the engine to the driven wheels. In a car with a manual gearbox, you make the connection by releasing the clutch pedal. If you want to stop or change gears, you disconnect the connection by pressing the clutch pedal. A clutch is a wearing part, so it does not have eternal life. And actually we are talking about the clutch disc. This is the part in the clutch group, which consists of a flywheel, clutch disc and pressure group, which slips with extreme wear and can cause sudden high revs.
Hard to reach
Replacing it is costly for two reasons. The first has to do with the price of the part itself. Nowadays most cars have this clutch group on the flywheel. It is a part that is therefore replaced in one go, which is simply very expensive. The second reason is that a clutch is in a hard to reach place, between the engine block and the gearbox. It means that in almost all cases the gearbox has to be disassembled and that takes a lot of time. Fortunately, it is a part that normally lasts a very long time and only needs to be replaced once in a car’s life.
