Case against former Volkswagen CEO in diesel scandal reopened

A German court decided on Thursday that former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn must stand trial again for his role in the so-called diesel scandal. According to the indictment, which was filed in 2019, Winterkorn is suspected of market manipulation.

Justice in Germany decided not to prosecute at the beginning of 2021, but has now asked the judge to consider the case again. According to the indictment, Winterkorn failed to tell investors in a timely manner about the financial consequences of the problems with the German manufacturer’s diesel cars. It is not yet known when the case will be heard, the court reports.

Volkswagen admitted in September 2015 that the company had cheated on emissions tests using illegal software. This made millions of diesel cars seem less polluting than they were. Volkswagen’s management is said to have initially tried to keep the scandal quiet.
